The WhyTaiwan vision

What if we asked,
“Why Taiwan?”
and a million people answered?

One answer tells us about one person’s experience of Taiwan.

Many answers may begin to reveal something bigger.

Why people came. What surprised them. What they loved. What frustrated them. What they discovered. What made them stay. What they tell other people about Taiwan.

Put many different experiences together and recurring perspectives and patterns could begin to emerge.Over time, they might help build a broader picture of Taiwan that no single organization, campaign or survey could create on its own. That is what WhyTaiwan is exploring.
Explore the vision ↓
It starts with one

One person. One story.

WhyTaiwan starts small. One person answers a few simple questions about their experience of Taiwan. No studio. No script. No perfect answer required. Just one real person sharing what Taiwan has meant to them.

That story matters on its own. Something more begins to happen when it becomes part of many others.

3What will you remember?
4What would you tell someone back home?

How big could this become?

Now imagine the idea spreading.

Start with one story. Then a few more. A university brings in students. A company invites international employees. A hotel invites visitors. A community holds a story day. A Taiwanese person interviews an international friend. An event invites attendees. As participation expands across places and communities, one local idea could reach hundreds, thousands and eventually far more people.

STAGE 01

Taipei

Visitors in Ximending. Students on campuses. Business visitors. People arriving and departing.

100Learn. Test. Improve.
STAGE 02

Taiwan’s major cities

Taipei. Taichung. Tainan. Kaohsiung. Hsinchu. Universities, business districts, events and international communities.

1,000People start noticing.
STAGE 03

Across Taiwan

Tourist destinations, train stations, night markets, campuses, festivals, businesses and communities.

10,000Thousands of different eyes.
STAGE 04

Everywhere people experience Taiwan

Visitors, students, workers, entrepreneurs, families, former residents and Taiwanese people introducing others.

100,000Bigger than a website.
STAGE 05

The world

Everyone who has experienced Taiwan becomes a potential storyteller.

1,000,000+stories
Give that number a moment.
Concept: The whole island becomes the studio

No studio required.

A phone.A computer.A kiosk.A few questions.A few minutes.A story worth hearing.
Taiwan itself becomes the studio.
One story is interesting. Thousands may begin to reveal patterns.

What happens when...

...100 people tell their Taiwan story?

You have a collection.

...1,000 people tell their Taiwan story?

Patterns may begin to appear.

...10,000 people tell their Taiwan story?

Different experiences begin to show Taiwan from many perspectives.

...100,000 people tell their Taiwan story?

People could begin discovering Taiwan through experiences that feel relevant to them.

...1,000,000 people tell their Taiwan story?

We don’t know yet. That’s what makes the question worth exploring.

As perspectives accumulate, something larger may begin to emerge.

A living human picture of Taiwan could emerge.

Individual experiences

What people noticed, valued, struggled with, discovered or remembered. Each story remains one person’s perspective.

Recurring patterns

Across many different stories, repeated themes may begin to appear. Those patterns could be interesting to explore without treating individual stories as statistically representative.

A broader picture

Together, those perspectives could offer a more human way to explore how Taiwan is experienced by different people.

Around the world

The world asks: “Why Taiwan?”

A different story can reach a different person in Seoul, Tokyo, Toronto, Singapore, London, Sydney or anywhere else someone is curious about Taiwan.

The network effect

The idea is designed to spread person to person.

This is how the idea could spread: share your story. Invite someone. Interview someone you know. Pass a story on. Open a door. Help a community take part. Each action can bring the next person into the picture.

One person. One story. One introduction.

Story Moments.

A full story can contain a small moment worth noticing: a surprising observation, a meaningful memory, a frustration, a discovery, a recommendation, a human connection, or something someone wishes others understood about life in Taiwan.

A visitor remembers the stranger who stopped to help when they were lost.A small human connection that shaped the whole trip.
A student explains what surprised them most after arriving. An unexpected detail that changed an assumption.
A worker describes one everyday frustration they wish were easier.A recurring challenge worth understanding.
A family shares the moment Taiwan began to feel like home.A memory that helps explain why someone stayed.
A former resident says what they still miss years later.A perspective that travels across time as well as distance.
Someone shares the one thing they wish friends overseas understood.A small detail that can reveal something bigger about life in Taiwan.
Concept: What a national story campaign could look like

The intellectual twist

What could 1,000,000 Taiwan stories reveal?

Not one official version of Taiwan. Not a tourism campaign. Not a single survey. A picture built from one million individual experiences. At meaningful scale, recurring themes might help us explore how Taiwan is experienced by different people.

STORIES
PATTERNS
INSIGHTS
BETTER EXPERIENCES
Every story remains one person’s story. No individual story represents Taiwan. Together, many different experiences could reveal patterns worth exploring.
Why do people choose Taiwan?
What surprises people after arriving?
What do people value most, and what strengths appear repeatedly?
What frustrates people, and what challenges appear repeatedly?
What makes some people stay or return?
What do people tell friends overseas about Taiwan?
Which experiences recur across countries, generations, professions or communities, and where do they differ?
What do people wish others understood about Taiwan?
The 10X idea

Think 10X.

If WhyTaiwan reached meaningful scale, what new possibilities could become worth exploring?
10X PARTICIPATION

Participation at meaningful scale

Communities, universities, companies and events could help more people contribute, making participation easier to discover and join.

10X REACH

New ways to discover Taiwan

Stories could travel through communities, search, media and person-to-person sharing, helping people find experiences relevant to their own questions.

10X IMAGINATION

Questions worth exploring

Recurring themes might suggest useful questions for research, education, tourism, public understanding and better experiences.

One million perspectives

1,000,000 stories.

No single person speaks for Taiwan.

Together, many different voices could reveal something extraordinary.
But one million still begins with one.

Big ideas still start small.

Large participation still begins with one person and one practical next step.

The story-capture experience is being built.
The first volunteer model is being developed.
The sharing mechanism is being tested.
The public story platform is in development.
The first stories will teach us what to improve next.

100 becomes 1,000.

1,000 becomes 10,000.

The next story still starts with one person.

Why I’m building it

Why I’m building WhyTaiwan.

I’m from Canada. I first came to Taiwan as a tourist, returned as a student, later came back to work, and eventually built my life here.

Over the years, I’ve met countless people with their own version of that story: visitors who couldn’t believe what they discovered, students who stayed longer than planned, entrepreneurs who found opportunities here, and people who came for one reason and left with something completely different.

Eventually I started wondering: What would happen if we gave all of those people a simple way to answer one question? Why Taiwan?

I created WhyTaiwan to explore that possibility. I’m building the first version, testing how people want to participate, learning what works, and bringing together the people and ideas that could help the project grow.

I don’t expect an idea this big to be built by one person. But someone has to start it.
An open invitation

What am I missing?

The idea is still taking shape. If you see a missing perspective, a weak assumption, a practical problem, a concern, a partnership opportunity or simply a better way to approach something, I’d value your perspective.

What would make WhyTaiwan more useful?
What opportunity should we be thinking bigger about?
Who should we be listening to?
What could go wrong if we get this wrong?
What haven’t we imagined yet?
You can help now

You don’t have to wait for one million.

One story. One invitation. One useful introduction. Each one helps the picture grow.
